How tall are you?
I am 5ft 7inches

What was your starting weight and when did you start to document your life changes?
My staring weight was 70kgs/154.4lbs and I started documenting my changes as of March 5th 2011

How much do you weigh now and what are your clothing sizes?
I weigh 63kgs/139lbs and my clothing size is around a 10-12/Small, depending on the style of the item.

What does your before and after look like? Do you have a progress blog?
You can see my initial 3month progress photo here and I usually post pictures on my blog of how I am looking these days.

Do you use protein powder for weight loss and muscle gain? If so, what do you use?
I used to use Science in Sport Rego Recovery Powder which was a recommendation of a friend (who happens to be a sports scientist as well).
My muscles do generally get sore after working out and I was finding it hard for me to keep running every day. This supplement definitely worked for me however I have changed and am using something different now.

Progenex Recovery in Loco Mocha which I purchased once starting Crossfit. It is expensive, but for me, it seems to do the trick.

What exercise do you do?
I love to run and completed my first 10K at the end of July 2012. I am hoping to enter a 5K and finish with a time sub 25min, before the year ends. Ideally, I would like to complete a half marathon when I turn 30.

I started lifting with the Jamie Eason LiveFit trainer on BodyBuilding.com and this helped me learn so much about muscle groups and also how to put together a program that works for me.  Each week I make my own split and tailor it to my needs and wants at that point in time.  I also like to look online and use other workouts for inspiration.  Some links are below if you fancy checking them out.

Home workout HIIT
I used to do regular BodyRock.tv workouts but stopped when Zuzana left.  I don’t really like what BodyRock has become and I prefer to follow the new Zuzka Light workouts here if I feel like it.  See my scores on my BodyRock.Tv page here and my scores for Zwows are here. I do not have a dip station, Ugi ball, fitball nor can I skip inside my house. I make variations to the workouts as best as I can, to make the most of what I have. Some variations I use are:

Skipping high knees – I do regular high knees, making sure my back is straight and I am not leaning back
Reverse push ups with dip station – I use my lounge room table to pull myself up under
Knee ups/V ups with dip station – I use my kitchen bench/corner
Ugi ball – I try to use the sandbag as best as I can, but most of the time just use my own body weight (which is still more than enough!)

Apps on my phone -

What do you eat?
I eat like a full grown man. I NEVER go hungry and I try to eat more than 3 times per day.

I pretty much only drink water as well. I cut out soda/soft drinks from my diet a long time ago now. If I feel like it, I may have some sugar free squash in my water, but it is pretty rare.

A typical day for me would be something along the lines of:

Breakfast: Overnight oats or porridge with Quakers oats, soy milk, peanut butter, protein powder, ground flax seeds and agave nectar.

Snack: Apple cut up with cinnamon and a protein ball/protein muffin (homemade of course).

Lunch: I like to prepare my lunches on a Sunday afternoon. This helps me plan for the week and make sure there are no surprises. You can click here to see what kind of lunches I like to prepare. I used to prepare meals with chicken or turkey, but I have gone off meat and am now researching what my vegetarian options are.

Snack: Small pot of fat free Greek yoghurt with agave nectar or a protein shake.

Dinner: Fish, veggies, salads, enchiladas, omelets (you are better off looking at this page as I take pictures of all the awesome stuff I make!)

I also drink Options Mint Madness Hot Chocolate for something sweet before bed if I feel like it (only 38 calories!).

I love to make smoothies, pancakes and omelets. I love to cook so I am always on the lookout for new recipes. I check loads of blogs each day through their RSS feeds and if I see something I like, I generally give it a go myself.

Your progress picture is cool. How did you make it?
My beautiful friend Michelle as I am completely and utterly clueless when it comes to picture editing and photo shop and all that stuff! She is also a very talented photography and SUPER cool chick - so follow her if you want to!

Thank you for taking the time to check out my blog!

  1. Would you be willing to share any of the stories behind the ink?

  2. Of course! Anything in particular you would like to know? :)

  3. Wow, this is really inspiring - great job! I will definitely be checking out the secrets of your success!

  4. I am mostly asking about the motivations and meaning behind the selections in your photos. I have no ink, and yet I feel substantial curiosity about the selection process, particularly with an angle towards "forever" because as humans we change so much over the course of our lives. You seem to have a few different pieces, so I figure you might have somewhat separate motivations behind each one? How do they all speak to you, years afterwards? Any regrets and any still in progress?

  5. I love your "Run like a girl" singlet. Where did you get it??

  6. Hi Rachael, my singlet is from Lorna Jane in Australia. I am not sure they have it anymore, but they have loads of other inspirational singlets etc.
And regarding my tattoos, I will do a post on them soon! :) Thanks for your questions!
